Google Korea makes plans for an expansion

"Korea has not yet begun to develop its mobile technology."

Google Korea is stepping up its game by tailoring its services to attract a larger share of the Korean market. The company is also hoping to extend its mobile services in anticipation of growth in the smartphone market in Korea.
“This year we will introduce a new main page to match the preferences of Korean users,” Cho Won-gyu, Google Korea’s head of research and development, said late on Wednesday.

Although the new main page has not yet been revealed, he said the new design will display popular topics, issue makers of the week, entertainment and popular blogs to mimic the look of Korean portals such as Naver and Daum. The company has already made some changes to its opening page by adding news, image slides and hot topics.
This is a huge step for the company considering that this is one of the few times it is altering its universal format, which displays a single search box under the Google logo.

Although Google dominates the world’s search engine market with a 70 percent share, it has been struggling in Korea against portal companies such as Naver and Daum that dominate the local market.

Cho said the U.S. company is positive about the changes its Korean affiliate will be making. However, he emphasized that Google’s new main page will not be exactly the same as that of other Korean portals.

“Our new main page will still feel like Google,” Cho said. “The difference between Google and Korean portals is that the Korean portals confine users to the content accessible by the portal, whereas Google’s goal is to send users to as much original content as possible as fast as possible,” Cho added.

He added that Google Korea is expecting to play a larger role in the mobile market next year, especially since mobile services such as Google Maps are already accessible on smartphones around the world.

“The increase in the number of smartphone users here will also increase the presence of the company in the Korean market,” he said.

“Many people think of Korea as a developed country in terms of mobile technology but personally I think Korea is a country that has not yet begun to develop its mobile technology,” Cho said. “Korean consumers think of video communication via mobile phone as mobile technology, but it is more about high-speed Internet access.”

Cho said the “mobile Internet era” will really start to heat up next year as smartphones take hold, and especially with the recent launch of the iPhone.

Telecom industry all shook up over the iPhone

The expected Korean debut of Apple’s iPhone by KT this Saturday has whipped the telecom industry into a frenzy.

Ahead of the launch, KT’s Web site is attracting thousands of preorders, while other companies are eagerly showcasing iPhone-related products and accessories.

Belkin Korea is one of them. The local branch of the global computer hardware manufacturer said it will showcase various iPhone accessories upon the smart phone’s launch. Aside from cases, the company will offer products that let users charge their iPhones while listening to or looking at stored files on the device in the car or at home.

The Korean branch of Dual, a German-based audio equipment company, said that it will introduce the Dual Pop 100, a new iPod docking product. The product supports FM radio and includes alarm functions. It is expected to go for around 68,000 won ($58.86) here. Tridea, a local company, has launched natural leather iPhone cases in four colors, including pink and brown.

And the Frisbee store in Myeong-dong, central Seoul, which is the country’s largest Apple reseller, said business for accessories has been exceedingly brisk.

“Recently we’ve sold more Apple accessories than actual Apple devices,” said Sa Joon, a branch manager at the Frisbee store. “For every 90 Apple iPods we sell per month, we sell an average of 1,500 cases.”

KT, which is the first and at this point the only company that will initially sell the iPhone in Korea, said the number of early orders for the device is increasing by the minute. The company started allowing customers to preorder the iPhone on Monday on its official Web site (http://phonestore.show.co.kr). On the first day, the company received 15,000 preorders. On Tuesday, the number jumped to around 36,000.

Accordingly, the Web site’s visitor numbers have skyrocketed as well, from 33,784 at the end of last Friday to 177,866 on Monday.

KT planning to launch Show Omnia smartphone

Quickly responding to the launch of Apple’s iPhone, KT, the nation’s largest Internet operator and second-biggest mobile phone operator, said yesterday it is releasing the Show Omnia smartphone.

According to KT, it will be the world’s first smartphone device to provide WCDMA, Wi-Fi and WiBro connections at the same time.
The Show Omnia is a fixed mobile convergence, or FMC, product that offers users both mobile and Internet phone services at a reduced cost.
The launching of the SPH-M8400 mobile phone comes amid widespread efforts to boost the nation’s wireless Internet and data industry.

“The price of the device hasn’t been fixed yet, but we have already started supplying it to corporate users based on preorders,” said a KT official. “We will start selling the device at KT stores starting in mid-December.

The Show Omnia phone is similar to SK Telecom’s T Omnia2, which was launched less than a month ago before the iPhone was introduced. The smartphones allow users to connect to the Internet wirelessly at a relatively lower cost.

Meanwhile, KT opened its Show App Store, which offers smartphone users various applications. By using Wi-Fi service, consumers can access a host of free content, including information on transportation, shopping and stock prices.

Though Korea is often dubbed one of the world’s most advanced countries when it comes to IT, smartphones take up only 1 percent of the total mobile market, according to industry sources. To boost the industry, Samsung and KT have been actively promoting their own assortment of smartphone devices.

WCDMA,Wi-Fi,Wibro Connection이 동시에 가능한 세계 최초의 스마트폰인 Show omnia smartphone
